OVERVIEW

The Story Behind BakBak

India is a melting pot of languages — 22 official ones and countless dialects! Yet, there aren’t many engaging ways to learn Indian languages beyond textbooks or dull apps. This platform blends language learning with social interaction, enabling users to connect, converse, and immerse themselves in Indian languages.

THE PROBLEM

Arre Yaar, How Do I Say That?

Despite India's rich linguistic diversity, there is a lack of accessible platforms dedicated to learning Indian languages, leaving linguaphiles, travellers, and cultural enthusiasts without engaging, conversational, and culturally immersive tools.

RESEARCH

Chai Pe Charcha!

Carried out 15 semi-structured interviews with linguaphiles and a few college students (ones who shifted to a new state). Additionally, the Fly on the Wall approach was used to observe their behaviour, and a Google Form was circulated which received 32 responses.

“I moved to Gujarat for college, and I really wish I knew Gujarati to connect better with locals.”

Most learners showed greater interest in conversational fluency rather than structured grammar lessons.

“It’s not just about the words; I want to understand the cultural context behind what I’m learning.”

“I’ve always wanted to learn Marathi, but I don’t know where to start — it feels overwhelming without guidance.”

What's Missing?

Despite India’s linguistic diversity, learning Indian languages remains a challenge due to outdated and ineffective methods. These gaps make it hard for learners to grasp languages naturally.
